One of the few nights I am not here at church, I get a call on my cell. It is one of the members from an older Bible study. "Something in your sound system is beeping" Beeping? Yes, I think it is coming throught the speakers or out of the sound booth really loud. Well they are in the Multi purpose room at the other end of the church. I question a little more and agree to come up and save the day/evening.
I stop by the convience store and pick up a 9v battery.
And go install it in the smoke detector in the hallway!!

Steven Curtis' Chapman's Daughter Killed in Accident [message #126046] |

The 5-year-old daughter of contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman died after being struck by an SUV in the driveway of the family's Nashville-area home late Wednesday afternoon (May 21). Maria Sue Chapman was playing in the area with several other children. Her teenaged brother did not see her in the driveway when he struck her with the Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving. A spokesman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol termed it "a terrible accident" and said no charges are expected to be filed. The child was the youngest in the family and one of three daughters adopted by Chapman and wife Mary Beth. The entire family was home at the time of the accident. Steven Curtis Chapman, 45, has won 51 Dove awards from the Gospel Music Association and five Grammys.

Hey,
We're thinking of upgrading our camcorder that we use for service.
Currently, we take the composite signal and scale that up to XGA resolution, which is then sent via cat5 to multiple Magenta Research receivers across the church.
Since all the TV's can handle HD resolution, I'm not sure how exactly using an HD camcorder (if we get one) would work.
Looking at something like the Canon HV20, would we use the HDMI signal?
It's confusing because we use Magenta Research transmitters and receivers right now. So I'm guessing I only need to change the transmitter? or can I just find a device that will convert the HDMI signal to 1024x768, which is the resolution the TV's take.
Any help appreciated! You guys are great.
Thanks,
Silas

Sorry about not posting my full name before...
But to reply, yes, it was a temporary test with the adapter to see if the hum would go away. I used the Hum X unit to fix my problem without a contractor having to come in to rewire the electrical system. The Hum X unit IS a 3 prong grounded unit that defeats the 60 cycle hum I was getting through the sub and the floor monitors. It's fully legal, and all the wiring is up to code...just different ground potential between the two outlets (they are over 100 feet away from each other).
I was at the church this morning doing a recording...and a hum we had in recordings is also gone. Proper electrical wiring and grounding is essential in your building for sound systems. ALWAYS make room in the budget for audio consultants for this reason. Even though it was a quick, and relatively inexpensive fix...I really shouldn't have had to deal with 60 cycle hum in a brand new building...they just didn't consider the audio system when they built the building and wired it--or they may have been careless. Either way, it's fixed now. No hum can be heard live or on the recordings, and we can make use of the entire system, finally, after weeks of chasing a ghost.

Hey folks;
I posted this in Lab Lounge already, but I have a question I thought perhaps you guys could help me with:
I have a pair of Peavey SP4G loudspeakers in a youth room here. They are presently being used as "subwoofers" with the HF units disconnected. I checked the HF drivers and they appear to be functional so I would like to return these to full range service by bi-amping them and then I'll place a pair of unused Yamaha SW181 subs under them for height and extra oomph.
Have any of you bi-amped the sp4g with success? What processor settings did you use? I have a stereo three-way crossover I can use, or I may be able to finagle a MiniDrive. The MiniDrive would be better, but I am not sure I can afford to sacrifice it from where it is currently used.
Your input would be appreciated.
Thank you

Just curious what everyone thought of the AKG WMS40 handheld wireless system for chorus singers, or the AKG WMS40 PRO C444L headset system for our guitarist/lead singer?
BTW-I just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to answer our questions out here. This forum really opened my eyes to how much I really don't know. Since being here I purchased the Sound Made Simple iCD and the Sounds Simple training packet... hungry for knowledge... thanks for all your help!

Our church choir is going to Great Britain next year on a performance tour. We will be singing in four or five well known English and Scottish cathedrals. I have been tasked with documenting the trip. I'm all set with photographic and video equipment, but I am a newbie in regards to audio recording. The video equipment will record in stereo, but I know from experience that the audio recording by 99% of all the camcorders is atrocious to say the least.
Therefore, I am looking for the most economical setup that will allow the documentation team to make halfway decent recordings of our performances. The performances last between 50 and 75 minutes. The last time I looked into doing some audio recording was long before it was possible to record digitally, much less ditigtally in the field. I am led to believe that the current crop of solid state, 2-channel, digital recorders will do a very nice job depending, of course, on what mics are used and where they are placed in the space.
I am looking for some guidance in two areas, equipment and some ideas where to set the mics. I have done some preliminary research and I believe that the setup below would suit our needs and, except for the booms and stands, would fit in a corner of a suitcase.
• M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 2 channel recorder $299 (list $500) or equivalent. • Matched pair of RODE NT1 condenser microphones ($400) or equivalent. • 2 Beyerdynamic GST500 - Tripod Microphone Stands with Adjustable Boom ($150) or equivalent. • Sandisk 4GB Extreme III CompactFlash Card ($87) or equivalent. Total $962 (inc. shipping) I would like to know if you have any experience with those items and if they are a good match for what we are trying to accomplish. If not, perhaps you have some other equipment recommendations.
I know it is asking a bit much to find a formula in regard to microphone placement in a highly reverberant space such as a cathedral, but I would appreciate it if you would give some guidance. Here are the general parameters of a typical space.
• Eighty choir members in four ranks. • Choir in the front of the cathedral. • Highly reverberant space with long decay time. My current thinking is that the microphones should be placed roughly 1/3 of the way between the choir and the back wall of the space and each mic roughly 1/3 of the width of the space from the nearest wall and "pointed" toward the sides of the choir.
A performance CD will be produced for the choir members and the church's internal use, and we would like it to be the highest quality possible within our equipment budget of $1,000 to $2,000. Although it would be nice, we do not expect to produce professional quality recordings, but neither do we want to produce a poor quality CD which would embarrass the choir. Our goal is to produce a CD that when people will listen to it will think, "That's a church choir, and it was recorded by a bunch of amateurs? Wow!"
Thanks,
Bob
P.S. Not to pressure you, but I need your input yesterday!
Regards,
Bob Wilson

Worship Leader Magazine will be hosting it's annual conference July 23-26 at Riverbend Church in Austin, Texas. Over 1,200 worship leaders and technical people from around the world have registered so far. It's not too late to do so and I encourage you to consider urging your music and production team members to look into attending this event. You can visit the website www.nationalworshipleaderconference.com for more information. Aside from some incredible workshops there will be nightly concerts with nationally known artists and a chance to experience "the third coast" music scene.
Don't forget NAMM is also in Austin this summer. Plenty of hotel rooms are still available. Come check it out.
This has been a non-paid, non-political semi-public announcement not endorsed by anything, anybody or any how. Just get away for a few days and enjoy a new learning process, fellowship and plenty of Texas barbecue and authentic Tex-Mex food.

Just a quick word of thanks to ProSoundWeb.com and this forum for allowing us to share ideas and meet new folks. This afternoon one of the regular posters, Clayton Luckie, and three of the the team members from the music ministry and technical crew at 1st. EV Free in Austin graced us with their presence for a couple of hours. It was a fun visit. It's all about relationships, and too often we don't take the time for developing new ones. Thanks to the forum and Clayton and company.

Thinking about an Alesis DEQ830 for use in a monitor rack. Anyone have an opinion as to build and sound quality? Not concerned with any other factors per se. I am aware of the features / layout. I have never been very fond of Alesis geq's (sound quality) but being a digital unit....maybe. Thanks.

Hey all,
just wondering if anyone had a particular "Roadshow" group come to their area? ... displaying some their mixing consoles, available speaker lines, mics and other various processing gear. I enjoyed the various sound samples that were played throug the different speaker lines, being that i'm not often exposed to these kinds of things.
